Agent-First Engineering: Silence as a Sociotechnical Signal
ongoing field notes
An ethnographic study of a software engineering team that builds and promotes heavy use of coding agents. Observes how agent-mediated workflows reshape collaboration norms, particularly the reduction of human-to-human asynchronous conversation (Slack, GitHub issues, PR comments). Focuses on silence, self-resolution, and private reasoning as first-class phenomena, and examines how competence, onboarding, and shared understanding are redefined when agents become the default collaborator.
methods in progress: always-on local work-trace capture; retrospective annotation; auto-ethnography
